JUNE 06 - Happy Birthday Ron! We won't tell anyone it's your "47th" today. Well we had an enjoyable motor (with at times sail) cruise on way to Ketchikan, about 6 hours. Glad there were two tie up places for us at the Bar Harbour Dock and the Wharfinger got us in close together. It's nice to be close to Dean and Carol. Stayed two nights so we could enjoy a day seeing the town along with the peoples from the four cruise ships in Port at the time. Good time!! I must have walked five miles. This morning Norm and I had breakfast at McDonalds where we found there was a hot spot for the computer so were able to get a few lines off to family. Bought a fishing license for American waters and Dean is scouting around finding good places to drop the nets and fish. Yeah!!
Pulled away from the dock at noon, fueled up and about ten minutes on the way we met a pod of killer whales (orcas) heading northward. What a thrill that will be for all the cruise ship peoples as they pass by the town. We got some good pictures. Aren't we ALL big on eagles, whales and bears?? Anyway we are southward bound now on our way thru' Nichols Passage between Gravina and Annette Islands where we pulled in to anchor in Dall Bay on the west side of Gravina. Sunny and warm - set out two crab traps and Dave and Norm talked to a couple on their small troller from Wash.State who also came in to anchor. The guys pulled in their crab trap for them and they reciprocated with a 10# or so salmon. So our first taste of salmon for supper tonight! We pulled our crab traps in the evening and had 8 keepers - five for us (our limit) and 3 for Dean. Cooked them up this am on deck using Dean's propane burner. Super! Now we must give crabbing a rest until we get this all used up as only allowed so much on board. Glad we bought fishing license - well worth it. As I write we are making a short run across channel to Metlakatla on Annette Is. which is a Tsimshian Village on Federal Native Reserve approx.16 miles south of Ketchikan. In the 1890's this group of people broke away from the Metlakatla village near Prince Rupert because of a squabble and settled here. This is a big village with lots of totem poles and beautiful mountains in the background with a waterfall coming down and entering the ocean at the village. As we strolled through we found the people very friendly and it happened that a pick-up truck to do with Fisheries had just called in with a load of big king salmon that were returning to the hatchery to spawn. As the families came they each received four fish, and as we were standing taking this all in would you believe we were even offered one of the more silver fish. At first we hesitated because our fridges and freezers were quite crowded - but how could one turn down an offer like that?? So with gratitude we did receive a nice salmon and Norm cut it up and we managed to fit it in the freezers. We shan't go hungry on thist trip!! Crossed Clarence Chanel to Clover Bay on east side of Prince of Wales Island to anchor overnight and barbecued the salmon given us yesterday and the six of us gathered around our table for a delicious dinner!! Fun! Couldn't ask for nicer weather!!
